PDF to PNG converter

Convert PDF pages to PNG images for free in your browser, with nothing uploaded. PNG is lossless, so text, charts and line art keep sharp edges; choose the pages and a resolution from 72 to 600 DPI.

Choose a page range and a resolution. Higher DPI means bigger, sharper images.

Sharp pages, and what they cost

PDF to PNG is the choice for pages made of text, tables, charts and line art. PNG is lossless, so the edges of letters and thin lines come out exactly as pdf.js draws them, without the faint smudging JPEG adds around sharp contrast. That makes it the better format for documentation, slides built from a report and anything you will zoom into.

The cost is size. A page full of photographs is much larger as PNG than as JPEG, and the pixel count grows with the square of the resolution: at 300 DPI a Letter page is 2550 × 3300 pixels, and 600 DPI makes four times as many. Pages are drawn on a white background, so the PNG has no transparent areas even where the PDF is empty.

How to convert PDF to PNG

  1. Open the PDF Drop one PDF on the page. It is opened once in this tab, its pages are counted, and the first one is previewed.
  2. Pick pages and resolution Type a range such as 1-3, 7, or leave it empty for all pages. The hint under the resolution slider gives the pixel size of a Letter page at the setting you choose.
  3. Keep PNG as the format PNG is selected when this page opens and has no quality slider, because nothing is compressed away.
  4. Render, then download Press Render pages. Finished pages get a thumbnail in the list, and Download saves one PNG, or a ZIP of several.

PDF to PNG converter: common questions

Is PDF to PNG better than PDF to JPG?

For text, tables and diagrams, yes, because PNG keeps every edge sharp. For pages that are mostly photographs, JPG gives a far smaller file that looks nearly the same, so use the PDF to JPG converter.

Can I get a PNG with a transparent background from a PDF?

No. Each page is painted white before the PDF is drawn on it, so empty areas come out white rather than clear.

What DPI should I use for PDF to PNG?

150 DPI suits reading on a screen, 300 DPI suits printing and zooming in, and 600 DPI is for fine print or large-format output. Higher settings take longer and make much bigger files.
