Remove a background
file4edit's background remover clears every pixel close to one chosen color, turning a flat studio backdrop, a green screen or a screenshot into a transparent PNG or WebP. There is no model here and nothing is guessed: it is a color key, so you pick the color and a tolerance decides how far a pixel may sit from it before it is kept. That means it will not cut a person out of a real scene — the tool says so on the page rather than letting the result say it for you.
How it works
- Add the image Drop an image. The tool reads the pixels around its outside edge on arrival and sets the key to the most common color it finds there.
- Pick the key color Click the background in the picture to sample its exact color — the pointer becomes a crosshair — or use the swatch from the keyboard, or press Auto-detect from edges again.
- Raise the tolerance Drag the tolerance slider until the background clears. The meter under the preview shows what share of the image has been cleared, and the tool warns if that reaches almost all of it.
- Soften the edge Set edge softness so alpha ramps down across a band instead of stopping dead, which is what stops the cutout looking stair-stepped. Turn on despill if the key color has bled onto the edge of the subject.
- Download the cutout Choose PNG or WebP and press Download cutout. The file is keyed at full resolution, not from the preview, and saved as name-cutout.ext.

- Does this use AI to remove the background?
- No. file4edit's background remover is a color key, not a model. It clears pixels that sit close to one named color, which handles flat studio backdrops, green screens and screenshots cleanly, and does not handle a subject standing in a real scene. If your background has depth, texture or several colors in it, a color key is the wrong tool for the job.
- Why can I only save as PNG or WebP?
- Those are the only two formats offered here that keep an alpha channel, and a cutout without an alpha channel is not a cutout. JPEG appears in the format list but is disabled with the reason shown, because written as JPEG the transparency would be lost and the subject would arrive back on a solid background.
- What is the difference between tolerance and softness?
- Tolerance is how far a pixel may sit from the key color and still be cleared outright. Softness is the band just past that tolerance where pixels fade out gradually instead of stopping dead — alpha ramps down linearly across it. The distance is weighted for the eye (green counts most, blue least), so a green key discriminates finely and a blue one coarsely, on a scale where black to white is 255.
