Size, quality and the transparent parts

PNG to JPG is usually about size. A photo or a detailed render saved as PNG can shrink dramatically as a JPEG, because JPEG discards detail the eye is least likely to miss. The quality slider sets how much: it starts at 0.82, which suits most photos, and lower values make smaller, softer files.

Two other things change. JPEG has no transparency, so transparent pixels are painted with the background color you pick, white unless you change it, and half-transparent edges are blended into that color rather than turning black. And JPEG is a poor fit for screenshots, text and flat graphics, whose sharp edges pick up faint smudges. How to convert PNG to JPG

  1. Drop the PNG files Add one or many. Because PNG can hold transparency and JPEG cannot, a notice appears saying that transparent areas will be filled.
  2. Choose the fill color The background swatch starts at white. Pick the color of the page or slide the image will sit on, so filled corners and soft edges blend in.
  3. Set the quality Drag the slider from its starting point of 0.82, and watch the strip above the preview for the first image's JPEG size and the percentage saved.

What happens to a transparent background when I convert PNG to JPG?

It is filled with the background color, white unless you choose another. Partly transparent edges are blended into that color, so a logo keeps a smooth outline instead of a dark fringe.

What quality should I use?

Start at the default of 0.82 and go up to about 0.9 for images with fine text or for print. Lower values make smaller files, and the preview shows the result before you download.

Can I convert PNG to JPG without losing quality?

Not entirely, because JPEG is always lossy. At 0.95 and above the difference is very hard to see, but the file is bigger; if nothing may change at all, keep the PNG.

Is JPG the best way to shrink a screenshot?
