JPG to PNG converter

Convert JPG images to PNG for free, right in your browser, with no upload. PNG stores every pixel exactly, so editing and re-saving loses nothing more, though it cannot restore detail the JPEG already dropped.

Pick a target format. Quality applies to the lossy formats; the others are exact.

What converting JPG to PNG changes

Converting a JPG to PNG changes the container, not the picture. Every pixel the JPEG decodes to is written into the PNG exactly, so the blockiness and softened detail of JPEG compression stay; nothing is sharpened or restored. What you gain is a lossless file: edit it and save it again as often as you like without each save costing more quality.

Expect the file to grow, often a lot, because PNG has to store the fine grain of a photo that JPEG approximated. Phone photos are turned upright first, and the EXIF block, with the camera, date and GPS location, is not copied. JPEG has no transparency, so the PNG comes out fully opaque; to clear a white background afterward, use Remove white background.

How to convert JPG to PNG

  1. Drop your JPGs Add one image or a whole folder's worth; .jpg, .jpeg and .jfif all count. Each row lists the photo's dimensions once it has been read.
  2. Keep PNG as the target The format list starts on PNG here. There is no quality to set, because PNG writes the decoded pixels exactly.
  3. Read the size change Once the first image is previewed, the strip above it shows the PNG's size and the percentage it grew by, so the bigger file is no surprise.
  4. Apply and download Press Apply, then Download. One image saves as a PNG named like photo-1920x1080.png, and several are zipped together.

JPG to PNG converter: common questions

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. The PNG holds exactly the pixels the JPEG decodes to, artifacts included; it only stops further loss from this point on.

Why is my PNG bigger than the JPG?

PNG compresses without discarding anything, and a photo is full of fine detail that JPEG had simplified. Storing all of it exactly takes far more bytes, which is why PNG suits screenshots and graphics better than photos.

Can I make the JPG background transparent?

Not by converting alone, since a JPEG has no transparency to carry over. Convert here, then clear a plain background with Remove white background, which saves a transparent PNG.

What should I use for photos on a website instead?

WebP: it keeps a photo far smaller than a PNG of it would be, and every current browser displays it. The JPG to WebP converter does that job.
