Why PNG for a HEIC image

PNG is the lossless choice for a HEIC image. Nothing the decoder produces is compressed away, which makes a PNG a better starting point than a JPEG when you plan to retouch, crop or re-save the picture several times. What the camera's HEVC compression discarded when the photo was taken cannot come back, though.

The cost is size: a PNG of a camera photo is far larger than the HEIC it came from, and larger than a JPEG of it too. If a HEIF image has a transparent background, the PNG keeps it, soft edges included, where JPEG would fill it with a color. Safari decodes HEIC itself; Chrome, Edge and Firefox fetch File4Edit's HEIC decoder the first time a HEIC is opened, and the image stays on your device throughout.

Limits
  • A PNG of a photograph is far larger than the HEIC it came from.
  • Only the main image is converted; depth maps and other images stored alongside it are left out.
  • EXIF data, including the date, the camera and the GPS location, is not copied into the PNG.
  • In Chrome, Edge and Firefox the HEIC decoder downloads on first use, refuses files over 256 MB and does not apply the photo's color profile, so the most saturated colors of a wide-gamut iPhone photo can look slightly flatter than in Safari.

How to convert HEIC to PNG

  1. Add the HEIC or HEIF files Drop them on the page or browse for them. Files ending in .heif or .hif are read exactly like .heic.
  2. Leave PNG selected PNG is already chosen and has no quality slider, because nothing is compressed away. Transparency in the file is kept without any setting.
  3. Check the size first The strip above the preview shows the first file's PNG size and how much bigger it is than the original. If that is too big for where the picture is going, switch to JPEG in the same list.
  4. Apply and download Press Apply and then Download. Several images come back in one ZIP, each named with its width and height.

HEIC to PNG converter: common questions

Is PNG or JPG better for HEIC photos?

For editing, PNG, since it loses nothing more each time it is saved. For sharing, a JPEG is far smaller and looks the same to most people, so use the HEIC to JPG converter.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the HEIC?

HEIC compresses photos with a video codec that throws detail away, while PNG stores every pixel without discarding anything. The picture looks the same, but it takes far more bytes to store exactly.

Does it keep a transparent background?

Yes. If the HEIF image has an alpha channel, the PNG keeps it exactly, including partly transparent edges.

Can I convert HEIC to PNG on a Chromebook or an Android phone?

Yes. Any current Chrome or Firefox can open this page and convert HEIC files, because the decoder runs inside the browser rather than relying on the operating system.
