From AVIF to a JPEG that opens anywhere

AVIF is a newer image format that many websites use because its files are small. A picture downloaded from one of those sites arrives as an .avif file, and plenty of photo viewers, editors and upload forms still refuse it. A JPEG opens everywhere.

The browser decodes the AVIF itself, so this page needs a current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. The picture becomes an ordinary 8-bit sRGB JPEG at quality 0.82 to start: extra bit depth and HDR brightness are left behind, an animated AVIF gives its first frame, and transparent areas take the background color, white by default. The conversion goes one way only. No browser's built-in encoder can write AVIF and File4Edit has no AVIF encoder of its own, so it opens AVIF files and never makes them.

Limits

How to convert AVIF to JPG

  1. Add the .avif files Drop them on the page or browse for them. A browser too old to display AVIF reports each file as unreadable; any current Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari opens them.
  2. Keep JPEG selected The format list opens on JPEG. A reminder that JPEG has no transparency appears, and the background swatch sets what any transparent pixels become.
  3. Set the quality 0.82 is the default. If the picture already looks soft, a higher setting such as 0.9 keeps the JPEG from adding blockiness on top.
  4. Apply and download Press Apply, then Download. Each JPEG is named with the picture's dimensions.

AVIF to JPG converter: common questions

What is an AVIF file?

An AVIF is an image compressed with the AV1 video codec, designed to be smaller than JPEG and WebP at a similar quality. Websites use it to load faster, which is why downloaded pictures sometimes arrive as .avif.

Why won't my computer open AVIF files?

Many photo viewers and editors predate AVIF and have no decoder for it. Converting to JPEG gives you a file every program can open.

Can I convert JPG to AVIF here?

No. No browser's built-in image encoder can write AVIF and File4Edit has no AVIF encoder of its own, so it opens AVIF files but cannot make them; the JPG to WebP converter is the closest small-file alternative.

Can I get a PNG from an AVIF instead?
