File4Edit

A Smallpdf alternative with no daily limit

File4Edit compresses, merges, splits and organizes PDFs free in your browser, with no daily limit, no account and no upload. Smallpdf offers more tools, including OCR, Office conversion, e-signatures and mobile apps, but its free plan has a daily download limit.

When to use Smallpdf instead

Smallpdf covers jobs that File4Edit does not do at all, and for these it is the one to use:

  • Reading the text out of a scan with OCR, or converting a PDF to or from Word, Excel or PowerPoint.
  • Signing a document, requesting signatures from other people, or editing the text inside a PDF.
  • Asking questions of a long PDF, summarizing it or translating it with its AI tools.
  • Scanning paper with a phone app, or keeping documents in online storage between sessions.

Smallpdf's home page, as of September 2026, lists Request Signatures, Chat with PDF, AI PDF Summarizer, Translate PDF and PDF Scanner among its tools, beside the OCR, conversion and signing tools in the table above.

When File4Edit fits instead of Smallpdf

File4Edit covers the everyday PDF jobs, as often as you need them:

  • Compress PDF with every setting open: the largest image size and the JPEG quality in Keep text, or Rasterize pages at 72 to 300 DPI with a grayscale option for scans.
  • Merge PDF with as many files as you add, and Split PDF and Organize PDF pages as many times a day as you like.
  • Image to PDF, which starts on US Letter pages, and PDF to image, at up to 600 DPI.
  • Documents you would rather keep off other people's servers, since File4Edit never receives them.

What it gives up is the list above: no OCR, no Office formats, no signing and no app. When a job needs one of those, use a tool that has it.

Why does File4Edit have no daily limit?

Because your own computer or phone does the work. The site sends your browser the code for a tool and the tool runs there, so a hundredth file costs File4Edit no more than the first, and there is nothing to ration.

The limits that remain are your device's: memory for a very large PDF, and time for a long batch. There is no paid plan to upgrade to.

Smallpdf alternative: common questions

Is there a free Smallpdf alternative without a daily limit?

File4Edit has no daily limit on any of its PDF tools, and no paid plan or account. It covers compressing, merging, splitting and organizing PDFs rather than everything Smallpdf does.

Does File4Edit keep a copy of my documents?

No. It has no storage and no account, and the file never reaches a server, so the only copies are the ones on your device.

Can File4Edit sign or edit a PDF?

No. It can stamp a text watermark and add page numbers, but it cannot add a signature, fill in a form or change the text of a PDF.

Is there a File4Edit app, like Smallpdf's mobile app?

No. The tools run in a phone's web browser instead, with nothing to install.
